Orphei Drängar on Tour with Ein deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms
Orphei Drängar is considered one of the world’s leading male choirs. By always striving for the highest possible quality, collaborating with the best soloists, conductors, and orchestras, and regularly commissioning new music, OD aims to lead the development of male choral singing in Sweden and worldwide.
From October 15–20, Orphei Drängar will embark on a tour, performing in five churches and cathedrals across Sweden and Norway. The tour begins at Missionskyrkan in Uppsala on October 15, followed by concerts at Gothenburg Cathedral on October 17, the Swedish Margaret Church in Oslo on October 18, Karlstad Cathedral on October 19, and concluding at Storkyrkan in Stockholm on Sunday, October 20.
The centerpiece of the program is Johannes Brahms’ Requiem—one of the greatest choral and orchestral works in music history. Brahms himself selected texts from the Bible, and in this deeply moving and expressive composition, themes of resurrection and light take precedence over judgment and death.
OD will perform the work in a male choir arrangement by Joakim Unander, originally commissioned and premiered by Lunds Studentsångare in 2021, in the version for four-hand piano. At the piano will be OD’s vice conductor and accompanist, Folke Alin, together with Oskar Ekberg, a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral pianist, as well as Professor of Piano at Marie Cederschiöld University.
The soloists for Brahms’ Requiem are:
•Kathrin Lorenzen, winner of the 2024 Solist Prize at Berwaldhallen, concert singer, and member of the Swedish Radio Choir.
•Lars Johansson Brissman, also a member of the Swedish Radio Choir, as well as a concert and opera singer.
The concert will open with a cappella works by Elfrida Andrée, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Anders Hillborg, Ingvar Lidholm, and Francis Poulenc, performed by OD and the soloists.
